That was the type of paper that was, and sometimes still is, the most recommended to print your résumé on for business professionals. But, how often are you going to actually print your résumé these days? Times have changed and so have the desired standards of hiring companies for their potential new hires. Because of the consistent changes, this can make job hunting cumbersome.
These facts can make the hiring process stressful. Actually, let’s be honest, it’s downright terrifying. You’re basically shopping around for what is going to provide for you and your dependents. This is no matter to take lightly.
So, how do we start?
Let’s take what you already know and measure it against what is considered successful today. What techniques you used to get your last or current job may have been successful, but will it work for your next bout of job hunting?
Here are the 5 reasons why getting hired today is different than yesterday:
1. You should ALWAYS be prepared for a sudden change in life.
This is everything from keeping your resume up to date to having emergency funds set aside rainy days… weeks… or even months. Yes, the job hunt can take time. Being ready at a moments notice will make the difference between you pulling the trigger to early on a job offer that wasn’t your ideal choice versus you being able to sift through and find the job you’ve been dreaming of.
2. Who you are on the internet should reflect who you are during the interview.
Whether it is LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter; you should always consider who has the ability to see what you post on social media. Inappropriate photos or unbecoming terms/views can be used to measure your character. Complaining about your current job on social media while trying to get hired for another job is a surefire way to get crossed off the list of potential hires.
3. The techniques you used to write your résumé are out-of-date.
If you wrote your entire resume using “Times New Roman” font, size 12, from a basic template you pulled from Microsoft Word Documents; you might want to refresh your approach. I, typically recommend using three different fonts and at least two font colors for a single résumé. Think of it this way, if a hiring manager’s desk is completely covered with potential hires’ résumés, you definitely want yours to stand out the best. Note: notice I did not say stand out the “loudest” or “brightest”. Slow your roll, Legally Blonde.
4. You didn’t send a cover letter.
Even though this isn’t a new technique, it’s something that many people don’t do; and, mostly definitely should do. This happens when job hunters are trying to apply for as many jobs as possible in a short period of time. Because, the internet has made it easy to get your résumé in front of hundreds of hiring companies in a short amount of time, writing cover letters to each company can absorb a great deal of time. Regardless, it can make a huge difference. If the job your applying for has ten potential hires with very similar résumés, the ones without cover letters are most likely going to be pushed to the back of the stack.
5. You didn’t respond to the hiring company’s email(s) fast enough.
We all live in a world of rapid connectivity. How fast you respond to a hiring company’s email(s) can be portrayed as a direct reflection of how fast you will respond to their customers. I strongly suggest having your professional email accounts set to push immediately to your phone with a unique chime that will prompt you to review and respond rapidly.
